Brief
Established in 1959, the partnership between Sir Frank Lowy AC and John Saunders AO is one of the biggest success stories of Australian immigration. Fueled by the same mindset of creating better, we were honored to upgrade the LEDs and structural integrity of the Westfield sky sign atop the Sydney Tower. The Sydney Tower, a fixture of the late 1970’s, has long been a landmark in the city’s skyline. Scentre Group has pioneered world-class and contemporary retail experiences, with the sky sign standing as a status symbol for their success and power.
Standing tall at 309ma above ground, with winds up to 290km/hr, the original sign face had faced severe wind loading, UV radiation and water ingress, which had caused cracks to the polycarbonate sign faces, washers deeming them unsafe. The existing LED modules in the sky sign had reached the end of their average 50,00-hour lifespan, necessitating a comprehensive upgrade.

The Sydney Tower sky sign is renowned as the largest in Sydney, with the ‘W’ measuring 6.36m in height and 22m in length of each elevation. Each elevation was manufactured in 3-parts made of aluminum, to keep the weight down to 2.5 tones to withstand high winds. To address the cracked polycarbonate sign faces, we place 3mm Perspex behind the letter faces, to strengthen the sign face without the need for replacement. It included the removal and remanufacturing of polycarbonate washer plates, and strategic placement of secondary washers to optimize distribution and stability.
To achieve an even spread of illumination across the iconic Westfield red, we installed 3,041 Optic LED modules supplied by Bounce LED, and 16 drivers within the existing structure, ensuring preservation of its original functionality and design integrity.
